Philip Martin
I create digital products, hardware, and design systems for Bay Area innovators.
I'm a UI/UX and hardware IC designer from California. I enjoy working on product design, design systems and design tools, but I don't take myself too seriously.

Teams rely on me to ship more than iterative features. I create frameworks, innovations, and experiences that unlock new business verticals and stand the test of time.
Originally hired into Square’s SDX (Software–Device Experience) role, I quickly expanded into shaping the company’s product foundations. I began by unifying core experiences across hardware and POS apps, building trust across design, engineering, and product leadership. With that alignment, I drove initiatives like Pay with Cash App, unified point of sale, and AI onboarding — each redefining how sellers start and scale on Square.
I joined at a moment of rapid growth, when the Instacart experience was fragmented and inconsistent. I built Instacart’s first company-wide design system, and established patterns that could flex across web, mobile, and in-store tools. That foundation unlocked growth in buyer discovery and engagement, elevated shopper messaging and logistics, and set the stage for innovations like Instacart’s smart cart.
As a founding designer, I entered a space where digital stethoscopes didn’t exist. I invented and designed the hardware, software, and AI analytics platform that defined the category. Those foundations helped secure FDA clearance, raise $100M in funding, and win recognition from TIME and Fast Company, while giving clinicians a trusted new tool in daily care.
I work with early teams when their ideas are fragile and undefined. By designing hardware concepts, brand systems, and product flows, I provide the structure and taste that turns vision into something investors, partners, and customers can trust.
